Faculty of Islamic Studies

Mauhadhuh Dhiraasathul Islamiyya established in 1980 was transformed into a kuliyya in 2004. The work of kulliyya was then later transferred to Maldives College of Higher Education by a Presidential Decree on April 5th 2010. As a result Kulliyyathuh Dhiraasaathul Islamiyya became a Faculty of this college and became known as the Faculty of Islamic Studies.

Maldives University Act legislation 3/2011 passed by the Parliament on the 17th of January 2011 required Maldives College of Higher Education to be part of the university within 30 days of establishing the Maldives National University. However, this transfer did not include the Faculty of Islamic studies. Therefore after the commencement of Maldives University on 15th February 2011 the Faculty of Islamic Studies was transferred to the Ministry of Education on the 17th of February 2011. Once again the Faculty of Islamic Studies became a separate college by a Presidential Order.

Nevertheless, the University wanted to retain the Faculty of Islamic Studies as a college within the university. Hence, all students studying at Kulliyya and still wanted to remain within the university was registered under Faculty of Islamic Studies.
